600 projectors were used to light up the historic Wumen Gate - 15,000 people watched the opening of the concert.

Jarre, whose hits include Oxygene, is renowned for his laser light shows - his Chinese concert unveiled the Year of France, a 12-month cultural celebration.

"I'm very happy to be back on the streets of Beijing and on Tiananmen Square which belongs to you," Jarre told the crowd.
Jarre played his laser harp, plucking out notes from the beams of light.
