Daily Mirror Editor Piers Morgan says the pictures are "genuine images highlighting genuine incidents of abuse".

However, military experts and a number of picture editors have questioned the authenticity of the photographs.

The armed forces minister Adam Ingram has launched an inquiry and promised that "no stone will be left unturned." The Daily Mirror has handed over 20 photos of the alleged abuse and Mr Morgan is set to be questioned by MPs.
