Calm has now returned to the central Nigerian town of Yelwa following ethnic clashes which began on Sunday.

Eyewitnesses told the BBC that several thousand members of the predominantly Christian Tarok ethnic group went from house to house killing whoever they could find.

Some witnesses also reported that Christian gunmen sprayed the town with machine guns mounted on jeeps.

Most of the buildings in the town - including mosques - were destroyed in the attacks.

It is still unclear how many were killed in the violence. Official figures put the death toll at 67 but some residents report that more than 200 have been buried in mass graves.

Thousands of residents - carrying whatever few personal they could - have fled the town. Thousands more are waiting in the town to be evacuated by government vehicles.

Hundreds of riot police have been sent to restore order to the area. President Olusegun Obasanjo called for all sides to choose the path of peace.
