In pictures: Paris marks liberation

Ceremonies are being held across Paris to mark 60 years since the city was liberated from Nazi rule.

Events that took place 60 years ago are being re-enacted - such as the raising of the tricolour from the Eiffel Tower.

Veterans from the French Resistance and Free French forces are in Paris to mark the event and remember the fallen.

Military parades are included in the celebrations, with French and US tanks on display.

French President Jacques Chirac attended a parade by the modern successors to the troops who entered Paris in 1944.

Mr Chirac also decorated some of the veterans, whose military prowess bolstered the French Resistance.

Elsewhere in Paris, veterans enjoyed less formal celebrations - with breakfast in the Tuileries Garden.

Some Parisians helped invoke the spirit of 1944 by donning period clothes.

Later, the fancy dress will continue as Paris holds a celebration dance, as in 1944.
