Libyan Ayman and Palestinian Ammar were flown to Tripoli to meet Colonel Gaddafi last week. The Libyan leader is reported to have performed a song with both young stars.

As the show ended, Mr Hassan received messages of support from the office of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The winner in the contest, part of the Pop Idol franchise, is to be announced on Sunday 29 August.

Meanwhile Ayman is said to have received Colonel Gaddafi's backing - though the Libyan leader reportedly queried if Arab youth should be distracted from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in this way.
