The United States marks six months since the 11 September attacks with memorial ceremonies for the victims held around the country.
US marks six months after attacks
At a ceremony in New York City two powerful vertical beams of light were switched on at the World Trade Center site, to the strains of "America the Beautiful". The Tribute of Light symbolises the two destroyed towers and is visible up to 32 kilometres away.
Two minutes of silence
For the people of New York, the anniversary of 11 September was marked by two minutes of silence to remember those killed in the World Trade Centre attacks. The city paused at the exact times when the twin towers were hit.
No safe place for terrorists says Bush
At a ceremony in Washington to mark the six months President George W Bush said the war on terror was now entering its second phase. "Every terrorist must be made to live as an international fugitive" he said.
