The twin towers later collapsed
Key moments as the day of terror in the United States unfolded. This is the timetable of destruction on 11 September 2001.

  • 0845 Eastern Daylight Time (1245GMT)American Airlines Flight 11 crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York. It had set off from Boston en route to Los Angeles with 92 people on board.

  • 0903 EDT United Airlines Flight 175 crashes into the south tower of the Trade Center causing a devastating explosion. It had left Boston for Los Angeles carrying 65 passengers and crew.

  • 0910 EDT In Florida President Bush is reading to children in a classroom when his chief of staff, Andrew Card, whispers news of the attacks into his ear.

  • 0920 EDT The FBI investigates reports of planes being hijacked.

  • 0929 EDT First reports of casualties start to pour in. More than 50,000 workers are based at the Trade Center.

  • 0930 EDT US President George Bush declares: "We have had a national tragedy. Two aeroplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country."

  • 0940 EDT American Airlines Flight 77, carrying 64 people from Washington to Los Angeles, crashes into the Pentagon in Washington. The nerve centre of the US military bursts into flames and a portion of one side of the five-sided structure collapses.

  • 0943 EDT Abu Dhabi television reports it received a call from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, claiming responsibility for crashing two planes into the WTC. However leading officials later deny the claim.

  • 0945 EDT The White House and The Capitol are evacuated amid further threats.

  • 0950 EDT All airports across the US shut down.

  • 0958 EDT Emergency despatcher in Pennsylvania receives a call from a passenger on United Flight 93 who says "We are being hijacked, we are being hijacked!"

  • 1000 EDT United Airlines Flight 93 crashes 80 miles south east of Pittsburgh. It had been bound for San Francisco from Newark, New Jersey.

  • 0950 EDT The south tower of the World Trade Center tower collapses.

  • 1012 EDT UK Prime Minister Tony Blair describes the attacks in the United States as "the most terrible shocking event".

  • 1025 EDT Car bomb reported to have exploded outside the State Department in Washington.

  • 1029 EDT The north tower of the World Trade Center collapses.

  • 1239 EDT Bush makes second statement, vows to hunt down and punish those responsible.

  • 1320 EDT Bush leaves Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and is flown to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.

  • 1344 EDT The Pentagon says five battleships and two aircraft carriers will be deployed along the east coast to provide upgraded air defence for the New York and Washington areas.

  • 1350 EDT Washington, DC Mayor Anthony Williams declares a state of emergency in the US federal capital.

  • 1400 EDT All US stock markets are closed for the afternoon, the US Securities and Exchange Commission announces.

  • 1448 EDT New York's mayor Rudy Giuliani says the eventual death toll from Tuesday's attack may be "more than any of us can bear".

  • 1625 EDT The American Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange say they will remain closed on Wednesday.

  • 1630 EDT President Bush leaves Offutt Air Force Base aboard Air Force One to return to Washington where he will make a nationally televised address.

  • 1720 EDT Forty-seven storey building seven adjacent to the ruins of the World Trade Center collapses.

  • 2030 EDT President Bush addresses the nation on TV and hints that at a strong US response against the "terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbour them".
