Bin Laden denounces Arab 'infidels'

The UK and the US dismiss the latest recorded video message by Osama Bin Laden, in which he calls on Muslims to defend their religion and the Afghan people in a holy war with Christianity. The White House says the comments are "an act of desperation". The US Defense Secretary meanwhile continues a tour of countries neighbouring Afghanistan.

Blair in Middle East peace mission

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and British PM Tony Blair

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair toured Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan and Israel in a whistle stop tour. He finished in Gaza, for talks with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. He earlier called on Israel and the Palestinians to stop the cycle of bloodshed in the Middle East.

Peace movements stage marches

Around 5,000 people took part in a peace protest in Switzerland

Opinion polls in western countries show large majorities in favour of military action. But the first significant peace protests since the start of air strikes drew more support than expected. At least 20,000 people took part in a march in London; there were similar demonstrations in Germany and across Europe.

Islamic warning over attacks

Foreign ministers from Islamic countries discuss the US attacks

The world's largest Muslim body has condemned the suicide attacks on the United States, but said the US-led military response in Afghanistan must be carefully targeted to avoid civilian casualties. Foreign ministers from the 56-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) discussed the US action at an emergency meeting in Qatar.

Mass protests in Pakistan

Thousands protest on the streets of Pakistan

Thousands of Pakistanis have taken part in protests in cities across the country. President Pervez Musharraf tried to reassure the people that the military action in Afghanistan would be "short" and "targeted". But even as General Musharraf held his first news conference, the first protests were erupting in Quetta and Peshawar close to the Afghan border.

The West unites behind the attacks
