Honours for England: London and the South
The chief constable of Surrey, Denis O'Connor, has been awarded the CBE in the New Year Honours List.

The 52-year-old former assistant commissioner in the Metropolitan Police said he was "delighted" with the honour.

Before joining the Surrey force in April 2000, Mr O'Connor, 52, was responsible for the Met's new strategy on prevention and detection of race crime following the Stephen Lawrence inquiry.

He said: "This honour recognises not just my service but also those I have worked with and the police service as a whole."

Business services

John Nike, owner of the John Nike Leisuresport Complex near Bracknell, is among the recipients of the OBE for services to business and the community.

He developed the giant leisure complex and owns the Bracknell Bees ice hockey team and Thames Valley Tigers basketball team who play at the venue.

The 66-year-old father-of-two, who trained as an accountant before building his business empire, said: "I am very pleased the work I do for the community was thought worthy of an honour."

New dress

Dorothy Fissenden, a school cleaner from Sevenoaks, Kent, was shocked by her MBE.

She has been associated with the town's Borough Green Primary School for more than 20 years - initially as a dinner lady.

Mrs Fissenden, whose husband Ron was a caretaker at the school for 28 years, said: "I still can't believe it's true.

"I will have to buy a new dress before going to Buckingham Palace."

Reconciliation work

John Champ, from Earley, Berkshire, was handed the CBE for his work with ex-servicemen and women.

The 71-year-old former national chairman of the Royal British Legion helped bring reconciliation with Japanese veterans.

He said: "I was also involved with taking people to meet the Japanese veterans who were in charge of them when they were prisoners.

"I expected a punch-up but they got on perfectly all right with each other."
