Honours for England: West and South west
The architect of one of the region's major new tourist attractions has been given a knighthood in the New Year Honours List.

Nicholas Grimshaw designed the striking biomes of the 86m Eden Project in Cornwall.

The futuristic landmark is located in a former clay pit near St Austell and is dominated by two giant, futuristic domes, which have been built to recreate the Earth's different climates.

Trevor Beer, a freelance journalist who helped set a up a chain of wildlife habitats in the region, is honoured with an MBE.

I would like to think the honour is for people like me who kept the industry ticking over when times were bad

Thomas Bowles
Mr Beer, from Barnstaple, Devon, helped establish the Wildlife Havens Project, which now boasts more 6,000 acres of land across Devon and Cornwall.

He encourages landowners, farmers and householders to use their plots to help animals and plantlife thrive.

Mr Beer, 64, who writes a weekly column in a local newspaper, said: "The project is an immense source of pride and it was a shock to be told I had been honoured."

'Upmarket' letter

Also among those celebrating is Thomas Bowles, from Brixham, Devon, who was given an MBE for services to the fishing industry.

He worked as a marine engineer in the town's harbour for more than 60 years.

Hailing from a family of fishermen, Mr Bowles, 78, only went into the trade because he suffered from sea sickness.

He said: "When I was first told I thought it was a hoax - but then I looked at the paper the letter was written on and thought it was a bit upmarket.

"I would like to think the honour is for people like me who kept the industry ticking over when times were bad."

Majorettes group

Another recipient of an MBE is Gladys Burrell, 72, from Barnstaple, Devon.

She has run a majorette group in the town for more than 20 years - and even organises weekly bingo sessions to raise money for the costumes.

The mother-of-11 said: "I only do it for the youngsters - whenever I talk about giving it up they always tell me I can't because there would be nothing for them to do."
