Honours for England: Midlands and East
A Cambridgeshire woman has spoken of her "surprise and delight" after receiving an MBE in the New Year Honours List for her services to astronomy.

Margaret Penston, 60, worked at the Royal Greenwich Observatory before becoming vice-president of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Society for Popular Astronomy.

She told BBC News Online: "Many teachers have never done astronomy, but it has become part of the national curriculum.

"This is a complete surprise to me as I can't think what group of teachers I would have particularly helped, although I have developed curriculum material.

'Great questions'

"Everybody finds astronomy interesting and everybody can wonder at the night sky from their back garden and and think great questions.

"But there are lots of other people involved and nowadays even primary school children learn about the solar system.

"Later on they learn about the evolution of stars like the sun, about galaxies and beyond."

Elsewhere in the Midlands and East of England, the leader of Birmingham City Council, Albert Bore, has been knighted for his services to local government.

Mr Bore, who represents Ladywood and is a former lecturer at Aston University, joined the local authority in May 1980 and became leader in 1998.

Cricket honour

The captain of Essex County Cricket Club, Nasser Hussain, has spoken of his pride at joining cricket's Úlite after receiving an OBE.

The England skipper was given the award for his efforts in galvanising the national side since he took over in conjunction with coach Duncan Fletcher in the autumn of 1999.

Colin Edwalton, 67, from Edwalton, Nottinghamshire, was "greatly honoured" to get an OBE for his services to disabled sport.

He was quick to praise the efforts of all the volunteers over the last 30 years who had helped to give disabled sports people the recognition they now achieve.

The disabled can compete at a higher level, as we have seen in the paralympics in Sydney

Colin Edwalton
"When I organised my first event in the 70's it was known as the Spastic Society Games," Mr Edwalton said.

"But last July in Nottingham we even had the Cerebral Palsy World Games, with 1,000 people and 46 countries taking part.

"I was co-ordinator for sport for the disabled through the council in Nottingham, who went along with us at a time when disability sport was virtually unknown.

"The disabled can compete at a higher level, as we have seen in the paralympics in Sydney.

"At last it has been recognised," he added.
