City council leader Mike Storey, 52, was a founder member of the Mersey Partnership and is one of the people behind an ongoing 800m re-development of Liverpool's city centre and docklands.

The 52-year-old is Liverpool's longest serving city councillor and is a former primary school headteacher.

He was previously awarded the OBE for political services.

I was so excited and then I thought 'What will people say?

Beatrice Law
British Limbless Ex-Servicemen's Association
Mr Storey said:" It is recognition of the fact that Liverpool is on the way back to becoming one of Europe's premier cities.

"It is also about creating decent jobs and making sure that more people can share in the development of the new Liverpool.

"We have made a lot of progress in the last couple of years, but there is still a lot of work to do," he added.

Workforce praised

Margaret Barbour, who was awarded a CBE in 1991 has now been honoured with an OBE for services to industry in the north-east of England.

The former teacher from Middlesbrough became chairman of the South Shields-based outdoor clothing specialists J Barbour and Sons following the death of her husband John.

The Barbour family formed the Barbour Charitable Trust in 1988 with Mrs Barbour as chairman.

She said: "This is not just for me but for the company - everybody in my hardworking force in the north-east of England.

"It was a crisis in 1968 when my husband died.

"I had this great responsibility, almost you could call it a mission."

Barbour jackets became cult fashion in the 1970s and 80s.

Foot-and-mouth fight

Brigadier Alex Birtwistle, formerly from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, receives a military CBE for his work directing the army's battle against foot-and-mouth disease in Cumbria.

And Beatrice Law, who has has worked for years for the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen's Association in Blackpool is named as an MBE.

She said: "I am over the moon.

"I was so excited and then I thought 'What will people say?'

"I do have a very good committee behind me, six ladies and one gentleman. They are a really grand bunch."
