Two wheels better than four?

Hugh McClintock is chairman of cycling group Pedals. He told BBC News Online what he thinks is required to get more people on their bikes.

Cycle lanes need to be properly maintained. Mr McClintock cites the example of this path on his route to work in Nottingham, which is overgrown with vegetation.

Secure and well-maintained bicycle parking is essential, particularly at train stations and shopping centres.

While both cyclists and motorists must behave responsibly, Mr McClintock says there is a greater onus on drivers because their vehicles can inflict more damage.

Pedals would like the residential speed limit lowered to 20mph, creating a safer environment for cyclists.

Road design is also important. In addition to cycle lanes, Mr McClintock would like to see greater attention paid to creating shortcuts for cyclists.

Creating cycle routes is pointless without good signage and readily-available maps.
