UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw visited Darfur's Abu Shouk refugee camp - home to some 50,000 people displaced in western Sudan.

He urged Sudan to make a "real effort" to ease the suffering of an estimated one million displaced people in the war-torn region.

Mr Straw used his short visit to talk to refugees about the atrocities that drove them from their homes.

Many refugees said there were too scared to go back because of the roaming pro-government Arab militia, the Janjaweed.

Mr Straw said the Abu Shouk was "one of the best organised" camps with "rudimentary but evidently good health care".

But a number of the camps refugees - especially children - appeared to be seriously malnourished.
