Six hours sitting in the Indian sun: More than 15,000 candidates turned up this week for written tests for 700 vacancies in the police in Bombay, India.

Police jobs are sought after even though basic salaries are around $110 a month. Perhaps the tough image is part of the attraction. Candidates were not put off by a high-profile corruption scandal involving some senior officers.

The khaki sari: There are some 40,000 officers in the Bombay police, but only a few hundred are women.

"The police force is much misunderstood, " candidate Harshala Janardhan Patil told the BBC. "They have a humane side which no-one wants to see."

Another candidate, Anil Jagdane, stresses the social role of the police: "I'll go to places where there are problems and try to solve them."
