Santa Monica Pier

Hold down your left mouse button over the image above, and drag to look around.

The pier, which opened in 1909, has not only been a landmark but also the backdrop for countless films, including The Sting, The Net, Ruthless People, Funny Girl and Beverly Hills Cop III.

The pier stands at what was once the end of famed Route 66, and the ornate La Monica ballroom was the site of some of the earliest radio and television broadcasts.

However, storms and changing taste took their toll on their pier, and it was almost demolished in the 1970s.

But local residents found to save it and won a battle to have it designated a national historic landmark. The pier was spared and has returned to prominence on the Santa Monica oceanfront.
