The final deadline for the each of the 50 states to resolve any outstanding issues regarding election recounts, controversies or contests.
15 DECEMBER
Electoral College electors meet in each state to formally cast their votes for a presidential candidate, based on the election result.
6 JANUARY
Congress meets to count the electoral votes and officially declare Barack Obama to have been elected as the next president of the United States.
20 JANUARY
Inauguration day, when the winner of the general election is sworn in as President of the United States and takes control of the White House.
