  • 7 November: Election Day

  • After more than a year of campaigning, the US electorate finally go to the polls. But election day fails to deliver the long-awaited result. The US TV networks call Florida for Gore, then Bush, then say too close. Close result triggers automatic recount.

  • 14 November: Bush still leads

  • After deadline for certification and hand recounts in some Florida counties George Bush still has narrow lead.

  • 18 November: Bush lead increases

  • Official count, including overseas ballots, increases Bush's lead to 930 votes

  • 22 November: Recount pressure

  • Miami-Dade county calls off recount because it says it cannot meet a deadline set by the Florida Supreme Court.

  • 26 November: New Bush victory

  • After extension of hand recounts, George Bush declared winner by 537 votes, but court battles continue.
