Full steam ahead
The race shifts into top gear on the traditional Labor Day holiday, with opinion polls showing the two frontrunners neck and neck.

George W Bush calls a New York Times journalist a "major-league asshole", not realising the microphone was live.

12 September: Gore fights back in polls
Al Gore inches ahead in the opinion polls, suggesting the bounce he received in the conventions may be going to last.

12 September: Democrats smell campaign rat
Republicans are accused of planting the word "rats" as a subliminal message in a television advertisement criticising Al Gore. Bush denies it - but has stumbles over the word "subliminal", prompting speculation that he does not understand what it means.
