The sheer number of primaries taking place in March - including the key Super Tuesday series of primaries on the 7th - "front-loads" the system, so that by the end of March the nomination process is in effect almost over and the general election battle itself becomes the campaign focus.

  • 7 March: 'Super Tuesday'
George W Bush and Al Gore score big victories in the key Super Tuesday primaries, which include the big three states of California, New York and Ohio.

  • 9 March: Bradley and McCain bow out
