    John McCain crushes Republican front-runner George W Bush in the New Hampshire primary as Democrat Al Gore squeaks through against Bill Bradley.

  • 8 February:
    Bush takes Delaware

    George W Bush wins the Republican primary in Delaware, taking just over 51% of the vote and forcing millionare publisher Steve Forbes to abandon his campaign for the presidency.

    Bush wins South Carolina

    Republican front-runner George W Bush puts his campaign back on track with a decisive win over challenger John McCain in the South Carolina primary.

  • 22 February:
    McCain pulls off double win

    Backed by support from independents and Democrats, Senator John McCain scores two wins over George W Bush in the Arizona and Michigan Republican primaries.

  • 26 February:
    Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa Republican Caucuses

  • 27 February:
    Puerto Rico Republican Primary

    Texan Governor George W Bush narrows the gap with John McCain, picking up more than two dozen delegates to the Republican national convention after party contests in four US island territories.

  • 29 February:
    Virginia Republican Primary, Washington Primary, North Dakota Republican Caucus

    Bush regains momentum

    Wins in three states give Texan Governor George W Bush the lead in the Republican contest for the presidential nomination, while Vice-President Al Gore scores a decisive win over challenger Bill Bradley in Washington Democratic Primary.
