Archive report: Deadly tsunami hits Asia

On 26 December 2004 more than 200,000 people were killed when an earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean triggered a devastating tsunami.

Places as far apart as Sri Lanka, Thailand and Somalia were affected by the disaster.

Worst hit was the Indonesian province of Aceh, closest to the quake epicentre, where more than two-thirds of the deaths occurred.

In this clip from the BBC News archive, Ben Brown reported as the world started to realise the scale of the disaster.

First broadcast 27 December 2004.
