As people around the world prepare for the annual festivities of Christmas and the New Year, there are many who are still trying to choose the gifts they plan to give to their loved ones and the poor.

The World Today on BBC World Service will be discussing the idea of gift and giving and how it differs in various part of the world.

What makes a good gift? Is there a difference between a gift and a present? When do you give gifts and to whom? What is the best gift you have ever received?
