A military helicopter has crashed in northern Greece killing all three people on board, officials say.

The helicopter went down in a field around 12 miles (20km) east of Thessaloniki, but the cause of the accident is not clear.

A local cattle breeder told Greek television: "The helicopter flew over us, and then we heard an explosion."

The army said the aircraft was close to its destination, a special forces camp near Lake Koroneia, when it crashed.

A defence ministry spokesman said the helicopter involved was a Huey UH-1H belonging to the Greek army.

He said the three crewmen's bodies had been found at the crash site.

In 2006, four Greek army personnel were killed when a helicopter went down in a field on a training flight.
