A British child has fallen from a balcony in Majorca, the Foreign Office has confirmed.
According to reports, the seven-year-old girl was taken to hospital where she is critically ill, but doctors expect her to recover.
A Foreign Office spokesman said they were aware of an incident involving "a minor, who fell from a balcony".
Police are looking for the girl's mother, who is believed to have been with her when she fell.
'Anxiety attack'
A woman at the Hotel Samoa in Calas de Majorca, on the island's east coast, confirmed a fall had taken place but said she could not give more details.
Humphrey Carter, a journalist with the Majorca Daily Bulletin, said the girl had reportedly fallen 30ft (10m) from a window on the fifth floor.
He said the family had taken two rooms at the hotel, one was shared by the father of the family and two boys, the other by the girl and her mother.
It is believed that the girl was found by a member of hotel staff on top of an office roof, Mr Carter added.
He told BBC News 24: "There is talk of a 10-minute delay but this is being blamed on a probable anxiety attack (on the part of the mother).
"By the time that the ambulance arrived, the mother had gone missing."
He added that he understood that the girl was initially taken to the Manacor Hospital, but was later transferred to the Son Dureta Hospital.
She had been in a critical condition, but after undergoing an operation her condition is now stable and showing signs of making a recovery, he said.
The three-star Hotel Samoa, which has more than 300 rooms over eight floors, belongs to the Hotasa Group.
It overlooks Cala Domingos beach in the resort of Calas de Majorca, about 38 miles (61km) to the east of Palma.
