The Body Shop founder Anita Roddick has rubbished claims that anti-wrinkle creams can slow down the ageing process.

Describing such claims as "complete pap", she warned she would disown The Body Shop if its chief executive Patrick Gournay ever introduced anti-wrinkle creams.

She said the cosmetics industry is pedalling "a scandalous lie", in claiming that these creams can stop wrinkles.

"They have a 30-year-old airbrushed model selling you the product. It is a lie that anti-ageing creams will get rid of wrinkles. They won't.

"There is nothing on God's planet, not one thing, that will take away 30 years of arguing with your husband and 40 years of environmental abuse," she told the Cheltenham Literary Festival.

"You'd be better off spending the money on a good bottle of Pinot Noir."

She was in Cheltenham to read extracts from her new book, Business As Unusual.

She advised women that only moisturisers actually aid the skin.

Wrinkle worry

She also recommended that women should not smoke or wear high heels, should keep out of the sun - and eat tomatoes.

"Tomatoes make you happy," said Italian-born Miss Roddick. "Have you ever met a miserable Italian? They are irritating but never miserable."

She advised women in their fifties to stop worrying about wrinkles.

"Forget the face," she said. That just gets more and more wrinkled. It is just the body you have to worry about."

She also said women can do nothing to fight cellulite.

"You are a woman. Cellulite is your partner in life."

Mrs Roddick, 57, is one of Britain's most high profile and successful businesswomen.

'Not pap'

She founded The Body Shop empire in the early 1970s, and has amassed an estimated 150m fortune.

Last month she announced that she will step down from her Body Shop involvement, to concentrate on environmental issues.

Her latest outburst has surprised many within the cosmetic industry.

Revlon spokeswoman Lucy Baker said: "Women are not complete idiots. A great number of women buy anti-ageing products because they work. They look to us and other products because it is easy to see a difference.

"We do not make claims that you will look 10 years younger but there are differences in fine lines, age spots and increased radiance, which is what women want in anti-ageing products,"

Clarins said anti-wrinkle creams work best in conjunction with moisturisers. "They are not pap at all," a spokeswoman stressed.

The Daily Telegraph turned the tables on Mrs Roddick by highlighting some of the more extravagant claims for The Body Shop products.

These include Orgasmatron, a head massage implement, which taps "into your bodies [sic] unique electrical fields", or The Body Shop's new Ayurveda range which is "an ancient Indian system of wellbeing where everybody falls into one of three distinct personality and body types".
