US health emergency over flu

The US government has declared a public health emergency after several confirmed outbreaks of swine flu across five states.

Janet Napolitano of Homeland Security explained the declaration was not meant to cause panic, but would free up valuable resources to combat the virus.

Meanwhile, the Center for Disease Control's Richard Besser said more cases would inevitably be found as the search for infected people widened.
