New advice centre on cancer opens

Wrexham Maelor Hospital
The information centre aims to give advice on a wide range of topics

The first Macmillan Information Centre in Wales has been officially opened at Wrexham's Maelor Hospital.

The £150,000 centre will provide cancer patients, their families and carers with information and support.

It contains a library, internet access and a quiet room for "confidential" discussions.

Cath Lindley, of Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales said the unit was "already having an impact on the lives of cancer patients and their families".

She added: "Whatever stage of the cancer journey people are on, receiving the correct information about their diagnosis, treatment and care is vitally important.

"The centre is already having a positive impact on the lives of cancer patients and their families in north east Wales and we hope to help as many people as possible over the coming weeks, months and years."

Emotional effects

The unit is the result of a joint venture between Macmillan Cancer Support, the local Shooting Star Appeal and the North Wales NHS Trust.

It aims to help patients deal with the physical and emotional effects of their illness and treatment and to give advice on lifestyle changes as well as finances and benefits.

Mary Burrows, North Wales NHS Trust's chief executive, said: "This marks another important development in our services for patients with cancer, many of who will face a lengthy and difficult period of treatment.

"For these people the extra support that will be provided by the Macmillan Shooting Star Information Centre will be especially valuable."
