Tumour diary: After surgery
By Ivan Noble
BBC News Online science writer

BBC News Online science and technology writer Ivan Noble was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in August 2002.

Since his diagnosis, he has been sharing his experiences in an online diary.

He is currently recovering from a third round of brain surgery.

I am back from the surgery and feeling better than I thought possible.

We had been ready for some difficult days.

Three months ago when I had my second operation I was pretty confused and upset for a couple of days before I managed to bounce back.

This time it is quite different.

All that good will makes a big difference.
I am happy, comfortable and enjoying my food and I have been back for less than 48 hours as I write.

I really am pleased.

Very grateful

I am very grateful to the people looking after me, the medical team and especially to everyone who has been wishing me well.

All that good will makes a big difference.

I have a few days now to spend in hospital recovering and the surgeon says I should be able to go home on Sunday.

It is all good news so far.

I am particularly pleased at managing to get out with my wife to the cinema and for dinner before everything kicked off.

My parents are looking after our little girl for a few days so we managed to see Lost in Translation and then go to a restaurant we have not been to for a long time - a real pleasure.

And then in the morning a very enjoyable double strength latte before I had to go nil by mouth.

I am looking forward to being out and about again.

I must confess I have only just started to read your diary Ivan, but in the last week or so it has been a real pleasure to read how brave you are. I cannot begin to imagine what you and your family are going through. I am so pleased to hear how well you are feeling after your third op. You are a credit to your family and friends, Take care of yourself.

Your diary has always been inspiring, but I am finding even more meaning in your articles. My father this week was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I hope my father is as fortunate as you to have good medical support. May you continue to enjoy life to its fullest.

I've been reading this for a while now. Had good and bad times over that period but this always puts them into perspective. I can only say your fighting spirit is an inspiration to everybody. Keep fighting and beat the thing. All the very best wishes possible.

Good to hear you came through the operation with flying colours. Everyone here was rooting for you. Looking forward to your next encouraging instalment. Peace.

Hi Ivan: You are an inspiration. You've helped me realise life is so precious - every day counts - so I'm running a marathon on Saturday with my brother. Good luck and hang in there!
Will, UK

I have really enjoyed reading your diary and it makes me feel totally humble. I do hope that you will get better soon.

Hope that this is the start of a real recovery for you. Thanks for being able to keep this diary - I'm sure that most people (including me) if they were going through what you have been would have been too scared to write their thoughts down. I am sure that you have comforted a lot of people - best wishes and prayers.
Bob, UK

Ivan, you are a lion. Keep going!

As one of the countless "out there" in internet-land, I anxiously reach for your diary the minute I see it mentioned on-screen. Keep going, keep being strong and cheerful, we need your warmth and wisdom to inject a little humility into our complacent lives. And I'm sure your family need you even more. They are lucky to know you, and we are lucky to have you share your experiences with us.
