12lb baby - with no painkillers
baby
Babies normally weigh in at approximately 7lbs
A woman is recovering after giving birth to a 12lb 2oz baby naturally, and without the help of any painkillers.

Normally, newborns weigh in at around the 7lb mark, and Hayley and Colin Newcombe, from Sudbury, Suffolk, are mystified as to why new arrival Thomas was so huge.

He was the size of normal three month old baby, and his parents have been forced to go shopping for bigger clothes to fit him.

Often, a baby of this size will be delivered by Caesarean section to avoid damage to either the baby or the mother, but Hayley, 28, gave birth to Thomas within two hours and 40 minutes of her water breaking.

At the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, anaesthetists had no time to administer pain relief, so labour was a more intense experience than she had planned.

Unprecedented

Colin said: "We have a three-year-old daughter who was 9lb 8oz and we thought that was big. But this is just incredible.

"The staff at the hospital said they had never heard of or seen such a big baby being born naturally.

"And Hayley gave birth without any painkillers because Thomas arrived so quickly.

"Hayley lost a lot of blood because Thomas was so big, but they are both doing fine now."

Both Colin and Hayley are 5ft 10ins tall and were of normal weight at birth.

Colin said: "The problem is that everything we had bought doesn't fit him."

A hospital spokesman confirmed that staff thought Thomas was probably the biggest born there naturally.

However, he is nowhere near the record for the biggest natural birth.

One woman from Carshalton managed to give birth to a baby tipping the scales at 13lbs 5oz.
