Double delight for Novotna

Hingis and Novotna: 24 hours of success for the Czech

Jana Novotna has taken her second Wimbledon title in just 24 hours after she and her partner Martina Hingis took the women's doubles crown.

The pair beat second seeds Lindsay Davenport and Natasha Zvereva in three sets, 6-3 3-6 8-6 and appeared relaxed during most of the match.

The 29-year-old Czech women's champion has now won £468,580 in the last fortnight.

After losing the second set, Novotna and Hingis trailed in the final set after they had their serve broken.

The game appeared to be slipping from the pair's grasp when Davenport and Zvereva went 5-6 up.

But Novotna came back with a flurry of passing shots and volleys to help the duo to a 7-6 lead.

Zvereva, a five-times doubles champion, served a heart-stopping double fault on match point before the pair recovered their composure to win.

Novotna has now won four doubles titles at Wimbledon following victories in 1989, 1990 and 1995.

Mixed doubles win

American teenager Serena Williams took her first Wimbledon title with Max Mirnyi of Belarus when they beat Mirjana Lucic and Mahesh Bhupathi in the mixed doubles final.

The pair won in straight sets of 6-4 6-4.
