Thumbs down for Kournikova

Kournikova: injured during victory at Eastbourne

Anna Kournikova, a women's semi-finalist at Wimbledon 1997, has had to pull out of this year's Wimbledon because of injury.

Tournament referee Alan Mills said on Monday that the Russian teenager had withdrawn due to torn ligaments in her right thumb.

Kournikova strained the thumb in a fall during her three-set quarter-final victory over the former world number-one Steffi Graf at the Eastbourne grass-court championships on Thursday.

The win put the 17-year-old into the top 10 in the World Tennis Association rankings for the first time.

However, she then withdrew from Eastbourne as a precautionary measure and visited a specialist over the weekend in the hope of recovering in time for Wimbledon.

The Russian, who was seeded 12, had been due to face Kimberly Po in the first round at Wimbledon. Her place will now be taken Lilia Osterloh of the United States.
