CV: Michael German

Born: 8 May 1945

Education: St Mary's College, London. Open University. University of West England.

Personal details: Separated. Two children.

Non-political career: Music teacher.

Political career: Contested Westminster elections 1974, 1979, 1983, 1987; Cardiff councillor and leader of LibDem group 1983-95; joint council leader 1987-91; director LibDem Welsh general election campaign 1987, 1992.

In his own words

"Our policy proposals have 'Made in Wales' written all over them. We are the only party which truly understands devolution.

"Compare this with Labour which still takes its lead from London; with the Tories who are campaigning for the Assembly to fail; and Plaid Cymru, which seeks to hide its separatist agenda."

On why assembly members should have performance-related pay: "People are fed up with politicians failing to keep their promises. Only the Liberal Democrats are prepared to put our wages on the line. If we don't keep our promises, we will give up some of our salary."

Interests: Music - plays piano and percussion, also a musical arranger and a church organist.
