The return of the Jews to the promised land
The state of Israel was proclaimed on May 14, 1948, but in fact the planning for a Jewish state had begun some 60 years earlier.
The birth of Israel
The creation of Israel had international approval, but violence preceded the birth of the new country, creating the tensions which have troubled the region since.
Israel builds a nation
Within a few years Israel grew strong, both economically and militarily. Its army went on the offensive, expanding the territory controlled by the young country.
Israel in War and Peace
After the triumph of the six-day war, the Arab-Israeli conflict turned into a war of political and military attrition - until Egypt and Israel made peace.
Israel and the PLO
For decades, both Israel and the Palestinians were set to destroy each other. As the conflict escalated Israel invaded Lebanon, getting itself into a quagmire from which is has not yet managed ot escape.
Israel and the Intifada
In the 1980s, the Israeli government found it increasingly difficult to control the Palestinians in the occupied territories. The intifada, or uprising, gave new momentum to Palestinian nationalism, until the Gulf War forced all players to re-assess their position.
The road to Oslo
More than four decades after the foundation of Israel, Palestinians and Israelis began to accept each other as equal partners in negotiations. But the peace process soon ground to a halt.
