'Resist and fight': Saddam Hussein's response ![]() Full text of speech by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in response to the US and British strikes on Baghdad:
On this day, and on this night, 16 - 17 December, and as we had expected and as they did eight years ago on a similar night, the defeated evil ones bombed a number of targets on the soil of your great Iraq. They miserably thought that they could bend your great will and your determination to stick to right, virtue, and pride and to the will of faith, justice, and jihad. 'Resist them and fight them' O stalwart and beloved ones and glorious women: We know that what hurts you the most is not their aggression and their aggressiveness, but the fact that they do not confront you face to face, depending on a long technological arm, which, in all events, is not a measure of the meaning of bravery, but rather your steadfastness, resistance, valour, and jihad. Resist them and fight them, as we have known you and according to our confidence in you. Fight the enemies of God, the nation, and humanity. God will grant you victory. Disgrace shall be their lot now and in the hereafter. God is great. God is great. God is great. May the lowly ones be defeated.
