A group has been set up in Jersey to develop a local meat market at a time when little is produced in the island.
The Abattoir Users' Group is made up of representatives from the farming industry and Jersey's government.
It is to consider how Jersey could provide for its people if the world faced future food shortages, group chairman Dan Houseago said.
The group will also users of the island's abattoir service and the States to liaise.
Members of the group include pig producers, dairy farmers, marketing organisation Genuine Jersey, the industry body the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
It also includes the Transport and Technical Services Department, which operates the island's abattoir.
