A new park in St Helier may be ready by the end of 2011

Jersey town Millenium Park plans
A new park for St Helier was first discussed in the 1990s

Jersey's long-awaited Millennium Park in St Helier may be ready by the end of next year, Deputy Judy Martin has said.

There have been more than 10 years of talks about the town park site in Gas Place, which is currently a car park.

If decisions are made quickly about alternative car parking options then Millennium Park could be open in less than two years, she said.

But the deputy added although funding was already in place the time frame was still "optimistic".

Last September politicians voted to set aside £10m to pay for the town park project.

Deputy Martin said the States must decide where drivers can park their cars when the spaces at Gas Place are lost in favour of the green space.

One option would be to offer temporary parking on a demolished housing site, Ann Court, while a permanent solution is found, she told BBC Jersey.
