Probe into early bonfire blaze

Police in Jersey are investigating how and why a charity bonfire was prematurely set alight in St Martin in the early hours.

The bonfire display was due to be staged earlier this month, but was postponed because of bad weather.

The parish event was rescheduled for December in aid of Holidays for Heroes.

Officers were called to fields opposite the public hall shortly after midnight when they were told someone had set light to the bonfire.

The Jersey fire service was called to put the blaze out.
