Winds force ship to abandon stay

HMS Severn
The ship was to visit Jersey following fishing protection duty in the Channel

Severe winds off the coast of Jersey has led to a Royal Navy ship having to abandon plans to berth in St Helier.

HMS Severn, which was on fishery protection duty in the English Channel, was due to dock at the Albert Pier at 0700 GMT and depart on Tuesday morning.

Islanders had been invited to tour the ship during its stay but strong winds forced it to return to Portsmouth.

The wind also led to Condor Ferries cancelling its morning sailings. The afternoon sailings are under review.

A number of trees were also blown down across the island as a result of the heavy winds which blew up on Friday afternoon.
