In-debt islander numbers on rise

The number of people seeking advice for debt problems in Jersey has risen, according to figures from the island's Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

The CAB was given £43,000 of £44m set aside by the States to help islanders in the economic downturn.

It has used the cash boost to deal with more queries.

"In 2008 we dealt with 121 new debt cases, and in the first nine months of 2009 we have dealt with 134," manager Francis Le Gresley said.

"We can set up appointments with a debt advice caseworker within three working days of a clients first contact with the bureau."
