Tuition bills system is 'flawed'

A review into the cost of higher education for Jersey students has begun in the island.

Deputy Montfort Tadier, the chairman of a new scrutiny sub-panel looking into tuition bills, said: "There are clearly flaws in the system."

The panel is urging islanders to send in views by the start of December, and some will be invited to public hearings to debate the evidence.

There are no universities in Jersey but Highlands College offers some degrees.

Deputy Tadier said: "Whilst some parents are fortunate enough to secure full or partial grants for their children, there are many who are facing huge bills for tuition, which we know are higher for Jersey students than for UK students."

The panel will review whether current higher education fee arrangements are acceptable and look at how other jurisdictions operate.
