Lecturer admits girl sex sessions

A leading British academic has admitted having sex sessions in Jersey with a 13-year-old girl he met on the internet.

Dr Trevor Jackson, a former lecturer at Newcastle University, made five trips to the island between 2005 and 2006.

Jackson, of Lyndhurst Avenue, Jesmond, Newcastle, engaged in sexual activity with the girl in meetings at hotels and had full intercourse with her twice.

He was released on bail to be sentenced in January.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Jackson, who resigned from his university post last month, admitted five charges of meeting a child following sexual grooming between September 2005 and February 2006.

The 46-year-old also admitted five charges of sexual activity with a child between the same dates.

Psychiatric report

Prosecutor Penny Moreland said the plea was made on the basis that full sexual intercourse took place twice, after the girl turned 14.

Jackson also faces other charges following the seizure of his computers.

Tony Hawks, defending, said Jackson will not be contesting the charges when they are committed to the crown court next month.

Mr Hawks said the defence team are seeking a psychiatric report alongside the usual pre-sentence reports.

Judge Tony Lancaster allowed Jackson's bail to continue, on the condition he surrenders his passport and signs on at a police station once a week.

But he warned: "Although I am adjourning for reports you have to face the inevitability you will be going to prison for these offences.

"Before you leave court today you will have to sign the sex offenders register as an interim measure."
