Plans for new town park unveiled

Park plans
Buildings have been included in the Millennium Town Park plans

Plans for the Millennium Town Park and revamp of the north of St Helier have been unveiled by the States of Jersey.

The area around the town's Gas Place is the focal point of the scheme, which was originally proposed in the 1990s.

The design includes homes around a park which the site architects said was aimed at making the area more secure.

St Helier constable Simon Crowcroft told BBC Jersey that building homes on the site broke an agreement for an open space, made to the island's residents.

Constable Crowcroft said: "What I object to most strongly is that they have completely ignored my advice to them when I first met them about building on the town park site.

"We've made promises as a States Assembly to the people that the whole site will be used for open space.

"With the increase in demand for housing in St Helier, the argument that they're making that they are providing space elsewhere, and that there will be no net reduction, is simply not good enough."

'Public debate'

Treasury Minister Senator Phillip Ozouf said: "A lot of great squares are framed by good buildings and that enhances the square itself - it makes it a safer square because people can see what's going on in it.

"There were serious concerns about the potential for crime in the town park if it wasn't framed by buildings.

"There is a public debate and ultimately a States debate to have on what we do with the town park.

"I want to see it delivered but it's got to be delivered within financially available resources."
