Escort for giant moving walkways

Moving walkway - generic
The walkways should be in place by the end of the year

Two new giant moving walkways destined for a Jersey supermarket had to be given an early morning police escort across St Helier.

A four-trailer convoy left the docks at about 0630 with the walkways which are 22m (72ft) in length and weigh about nine tonnes each.

The walkways are to be installed at the third-floor level of the Grande Marche supermarket.

The work will done at night and should be finished by the end of the year.

The walkways will be lifted onto the roof of the supermarket car park by crane. They will them be moved downs ramps before being hoisted into a large opening that has been created above the existing walkway.

When completed, the third-floor car park will be opened and existing first floor will be turned into a new store which is due to open in 2010.
