Free entry on zoo's 50th birthday

Jersey's Durrell Wildlife Zoo marked its 50th anniversary by throwing open its doors to the public for free visits on Sunday.

Visitors were only asked to contribute their memories of the zoo for a display.

The zoo's founder, broadcaster and author Gerald Durrell, who died in 1995, said zoos had a duty to save species from extinction.

After the zoo opened in 1959 he set up the Durrell Wildlife Trust in 1963.
