Pay freeze 'could help charities'

Local charities in Jersey could benefit if a recommendation to freeze politicians' pay is taken on board in the States.

In recent years the salaries of States members have risen by about £1,000.

But in a consultation on pay St Peter Constable John Refault has suggested salaries should be frozen - saving about £40,000.

St Helier deputy Paul Le Claire said that money could be used to support local charities instead.

The issue of members' pay is due to be debated in the States on 10 March.
