Senator-elect Alan Breckon is to challenge Senator Terry Le Sueur for the top job in Jersey's government.

Mr Breckon, who came second in the senatorial elections in October, decided over the weekend he would stand for chief minister.

He and Treasury Minister Mr Le Sueur are the only candidates so far.

Other names are expected before nominations close on 3 December. States members will elect the island's new chief minister on Monday 8 December.

Senator Frank Walker, who was the first person to be elected to the position of chief minister in 2005, has come to the end of his three-year term.
