Animal charity's firework advice

Dog generic
Dogs should be exercised during the day when there is less risk of fireworks

A charity in Jersey has issued its annual warning about not letting fireworks off near animals.

The Jersey Society for the Protection of Animals (JSPCA) said the explosives should only be handled by responsible adults to prevent serious injuries.

It said fireworks caused distress to a variety of animals every year.

Pet owners are advised to keep dogs and cats indoors, with curtains and windows closed. Switching on a television or radio could help mask the noise.

The JSPCA said dogs should be exercised during the day when fireworks were less likely.

Pets should be micro-chipped or collared so they can be returned easily if they do run away.

Horses, ponies and donkeys should also be stabled, with the doors closed.
