Employment ban plans for children

The consultation is open to the public until 27 February

Children under the age of 13 could be banned from having a job in Jersey.

A United Nations convention adopted in 1989 gives young people the right to be protected from exploitation and work which harms their education or health.

But Jersey did not sign the convention and does not have laws on a minimum age or the hours a child can work.

The Health Department said it appeared Jersey was less committed to protecting children's rights than was actually the case and has proposed the ban.

Islanders have until the end of February to comment on the proposals in the States draft Green Paper.
