States drops tax on gas guzzlers

Plans to tax people who buy large gas guzzling cars in Jersey have been abandoned.

The States threw out the plan to introduce a vehicles emissions tax after opposition from Environment Minister Freddie Cohen.

He said increasing the price of new cars could encourage people to keep their less efficient older models.

He promised widespread public consultation next year before any environmental taxes were introduced.
